What are Certified Athletic Trainers (ATs)?

Certified Athletic Trainers are highly qualified, multi-skilled healthcare professionals specifically trained in the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of medical conditions in addition to emergent, acute, and chronic injuries. ATs work collaboratively under the scope of a plan of care or written protocol provided by a physician (guidelines and regulations differ state-to-state).

Athletic training is recognized by the American Medical Association (AMA), Health Resources Services Administration (HRSA) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as an allied healthcare profession. ATs are sometimes confused with “personal trainers” however there is a large difference in education, skill set, and job duties – the athletic training academic curriculum and clinical training is that of a medical model.

In athletic settings, Certified Athletic Trainers are usually the first healthcare professional on the scene of an injury. Their unique skill set allows them to recognize, triage, and manage acute injury. As a part of the healthcare team across many settings, services provided by ATs includes (but is not limited to):

Emergency response and care
First aid
Injury risk assessments
Environmental safety monitoring
Ergonomic and biomechanical assessment
Concussion assessment and care
Manual therapy and stretching
Application of therapeutic modalities
Physical rehabilitation
Splinting
Taping and supportive wrapping

Certified Athletic Trainers are valuable members of our team. They are the leaders in health and safety in sports. They help facilitate a high level of health care, ensure safe participation, improve patient outcomes, and limit unnecessary healthcare costs. Certified Athletic Trainers often oversee compliance to state and federal healthcare laws. Certified Athletic Trainers at JAG PT

Nationally certified by the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC)
Licensed by the New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners and/or the Pennsylvania State Board of Medicine, and/or certified by The State of New York Education Department
Trained in Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) as a healthcare provider
Insured through a professional liability insurance policy
Continuous education and specialized training in prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of medical conditions in addition to emergent, acute, and chronic injuries for the physically active
