    Understanding CPR

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique used during cardiac emergencies such as heart attacks, choking, or near-drowning. These situations can cause a person to stop breathing or develop an irregular heart rhythm, and immediate CPR can double or triple survival chances – especially when paired with early AED use.

    Who Performs CPR?

    • Certified ProvidersTrained individuals perform conventional CPR, which includes chest compressions and rescue breaths at a rate of 100–120 compressions per minute, with a 30:2 compression-to-breath ratio. An AED should be requested and applied as soon as it arrives.
    • General Public / Bystanders: Even without formal training, bystanders can provide hands-only CPR, which involves continuous chest compressions at 100–120 per minute until help arrives. An AED should be requested immediately. (American Heart Association, 2023)

    The Importance of AEDs

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) deliver an electric shock to restore a normal heart rhythm during cardiac arrest. AEDs are designed so anyone can use them – they provide clear verbal and visual prompts, automatically analyze heart rhythm, and guide users step-by-step.

You’ll find AEDs in locations like schools, gyms, healthcare facilities, sports venues, airports, and hotels. Knowing where the nearest AED is – and how to use it – can dramatically improve survival rates.

All CPR certification courses at JAG Physical Therapy include formal AED training to ensure you feel confident and prepared. (American Heart Association, 2017)
