How to Safely Regain Full Range of Motion In Your Knee After ACL Surgery

Home News & Videos How to Safely Regain Full Range of Motion In Your Knee After ACL Surgery

Lacking full range of motion in your knee is one of the most common ACL recovery setbacks we see at JAG PT. If it isn’t addressed early, it may lead to a permanent limp, tight hamstrings, and long-term joint pain. In this video, our physical therapist Jackie breaks down how to safely regain full range or motion after ACL surgery so knee movements and extension can be performed with ease.

THE EXERCISE ROUTINE

  • Low Load Duration Extension: Prop your ankle up on a towel or roller and let gravity gently straighten out your knee. Hold this passive stretch for 5 to 15 minutes.

  • Terminal Knee Extensions (TKEs): Place a ball behind the knee that you’re looking to straighten and a wall behind you. Then, actively straighten and lock the knee joint by pushing your knee back. Perform 3 sets of 10 repetitions.

  • Quad Sets: Sit with your leg straight out, and place a towel under your knee. Squeeze your thigh muscle hard, and press the back of your knee into the towel. Hold for 5–10 seconds. Perform 3 sets of 10 repetitions.

Disclaimer: ACL recovery varies for everyone. Always consult with your orthopedic surgeon or physical therapy team before trying new exercises.
