Practicing yoga has become popular in our culture over the last few decades, thanks to its long list of benefits. Yoga originated from observing nature, which we as humans are a part of, even though we often become detached from it. In our Pelvic Health and Orthopedic Physical Therapy practice, incorporating yoga has been an important element of patients' healing and finding a way to own their bodies.
The breathwork (pranayama) provides our patients with a foundation on which they can find balance between the body and the mind. The practice of physical postures (asanas) in coordination with the breath impacts the whole body. Besides toning muscles, tissues, joints, and nerves, it helps in the smooth functioning of all body systems.
A pioneer of yoga who brought the practice from India to the USA, B.K.S. Iyengar, said in Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health, “Asanas relax the body and mind, allowing both to recover from fatigue or weakness and the stress of daily life. Asanas also boost metabolism, lymphatic circulation, and hormonal secretion, and bring about a chemical balance in the body.”
Marzena Bard, PTA, CYT runs our Therapeutic Yoga program, which is dedicated to everyone regardless of yoga experience, age, body type, or physical fitness level. The beauty of the program is how yoga postures can be customized to our patients' needs and abilities and woven into physical therapy care. Other benefits include experiencing yoga without the performance pressure of being in a class or working through modifications to eventually resume group or solo yoga practice.
